Archive for March, 2010

A minor Twit-pocalypse broke out yesterday when LeVar Burton accidentally posted his phone number to his account. It sounds like he had to get his number changed thanks to all of the incoming calls, but luckily for him, his old "Star Trek: The Next Generation" co-stars Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner were around to lend moral support.

Judging from the Twitter-Wood feed, everyone who wasn't calling LeVar was at the Hollywood Bowl to see Paul McCartney, and a few posted pictures from the event. Click on past the jump and you can see who was there, as well as what Damon Lindelof thought about "Lost" this week, what Tom Hanks looks like during location scouting and what Richard Kelly thinks of the iPad. It's all in Twitter-Wood for March 31st, 2010.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is pretty great. Really. I've never been much of a wrestling fan, but I've definitely enjoyed his work as an actor. "The Rundown" and "Walking Tall" are both pure entertainment. And his presence in both "Be Cool" and "Southland Tales" elevated those two relative disasters. He's been in a couple movies since those which I haven't seen, but I'm really looking forward to his next one, "Faster," featuring an ensemble cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino, Moon Bloodgood, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Maggie Grace.

Johnson told MTV's Larry Carroll at ShoWest recently that there's one other notable name in the cast, someone who hasn't come up yet in previous announcements: "Dexter" star Jennifer Carpenter. "['Faster' is] like a mix between 'The Good, the Bad & the Ugly' [and] 'Bullitt.' It has an old-school texture to it where no one has names. There's the Driver, the Killer, the Cop, the Evangelist, the Woman," he said. Larry asked, is "The Woman" Gugino? "She's actually a cop too," Johnson replied. "Jennifer Carpenter." Neat!

In the movie, Johnson plays an ex-convict who is out for revenge after he and his brother are double-crossed during a heist. Johnson's "Driver" ends up in jail and his brother... six feet under. From the sound of things, much ass will be kicked and many names will be taken.

Johnson is excited about the role, but he's also excited to simply be a part of such a cool idea. "This is where I give a lot of credit to the writers," he said. "It's one of those scripts that had gone throughout Hollywood, one of those hot commodities that had gone throughout Hollywood."

Larry also asked the actor about his character's name, Driver. Another notable action hero has a similar moniker-- Jason Statham's Transporter. So how would a race between the two to deliver an important package pan out?

"[Statham] would be the better driver because that's what he does. In my case, I'm not a driver. That's what the name of my character is [and] I'm pretty good and proficient with cars, but not like the Transporter," Johnson explained. He's not going to concede defeat so easily though.

"Once we get to the destination," he continued, "who would kick who's ass? That would be me. Kicking his ass. He'd better watch out."

"He's my buddy," Johnson said, turning to address Statham directly, with the camera acting as a proxy, "and you'd better watch out."

What do you think of the Carpenter casting? What else have you heard about "Faster"? Do you plan to see it? For more on "Faster," check out the rest of Larry's interview on MTV.com!

Who’s Who (1979)

UK
Television Film
Series Title: Play for Today (1970-1984)
Writer/Director: Mike Leigh
Cinematographer: John Else
Cast: Richard Kane, Adam Norton, Simon Chandler, Catherine Hall, Felicity Dean, Graham Seed, Jeffrey Wickham, David Neville, Richenda Carey, Phil Davis, Joolia Cappleman, Sam Kelly, Geraldine James

Leigh’s ramshackle, gently satirical, and thoroughly entertaining slice-of-life drama, made as part of the BBC’s Play for Today series, loosely knits together a number of interconnected social gatherings, casual conversations, and formal meetings featuring the employees of a small stockbrokerage, humorously - with a keen eye for class difference - painting a portrait of late '70s British society. If you're not looking forward to "Iron Man 2," then you're either not a fan of blockbuster action or you hate fun. Don't argue-- this is simply a fact. So as long as you don't fall into that mutant minority, there's a cool new thing on the Internet today that you ought to get excited about.

Tony Stark is the fictional captain of industry who leads a secret second life as the costumed superhero Iron Man. He is one of the foremost scientific minds on the planet, but he's got killer business sense and an A-list superstar's sense of style. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Donald Trump and George Clooney rolled into one. This fact is apparent on a new website that launched today, promoting Stark Expo 2010, which happens to kick off on the same day "Iron Man 2" hits theatres. For more on the new viral destination, check out the rundown on MTV Splash Page or head over to the new page and see for yourself.

"Avatar" changed the game for Hollywood last year with its incredible 3-D presentation and "Tron Legacy" will keep that trend flying high at the end of this year, but Alexandre Aja knows what the real appeal of 3-D is: T&A. His "Piranha 3-D" hits theaters on August 27, and there'll be plenty of T&A on hand to titillate 3-D-loving audiences. Aja promises "3-D double-D boobs" along with generous helpings of bloody violence.

"I think we broke all the records in the manner of blood used," he said in an exclusive interview with MTV's Eric Ditzian. "I don't remember the exact number, but we passed 'Kill Bill.' You've never seen something like that before." Much of the fake blood is spilled during one scene in particular, involving a wet t-shirt contest.

"The biggest thing for the fans is going to be the big spring-break wet T-shirt contest, where we have thousands of spring-break groups on the water," Aja revealed. "And the party has its climax when the piranhas come and start attacking everyone. It's almost 25 minutes of a huge massacre, and it's really insane." That's a pretty serious amount of time for a piranha massacre, but it's definitely true to the pulp roots of the original "Piranha."

Aja was initially unsure about converting his movie to 3-D, but the realities of shooting in that format from the start -- as is the case with "Avatar" and "Tron Legacy" -- required it. "We were going to shoot with the camera system Cameron used, and we found out that, of course, we don't have the same budget as an 'Avatar' or as much time. And shooting on the water with a real 3-D camera brings some very big restrictions in terms of dealing with reflections."

Aja was ultimately sold on doing a conversion after seeing some test reels that included footage from "Star Wars" and "Titanic." That said, the movie will feature some true 3-D as opposed to converted scenes. "All of our piranha are CG [and] they are all real 3-D in the computer. Our movie is going to be completely converted, but a big chunk of it will be real 3-D as well."

The key thing to remember is that "Piranha 3-D" is all about having fun. Where "Avatar" maintains some degree of seriousness, Aja sees "Piranha" as more of a "cult guilty pleasure," along the lines of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Gremlins" and "The Breakfast Club."

"I understand why James Cameron in "Avatar" didn't want to make the 3-D gimmicky, and he was right," Aja said. "But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience."
